People are most concerned about AI, facial recognition and government and businesses either leaking their information or sharing and using it for a different purpose than why they gave it.
In April 2024 the New Zealand Privacy Commissioner published research that found the top privacy concerns of citizens were businesses and government organisations doing things with their personal information that they themselves would not want done or don’t even know about:
Sharing your personal information without telling you
Combining pieces of personal information about you from different sources for a different purpose than you gave the information
Using artificial intelligence to make decisions about you
Losing your personal information in a cyber attack
Using facial recognition technology in public places to identify or profile you
The same research found that, for the majority of people, protecting their personal information has become a major concern in their life. 80% of people said they want more control and choice over the collection and use of their personal information.
